Software Manager

Position Summary

We are seeking a Software Manager to lead software development teams and oversee the delivery of reliable, scalable, and maintainable software solutions. This role is responsible for technical direction, delivery planning, team development, engineering standards, and collaboration with product, project, and business stakeholders. The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering expertise with proven people leadership and the ability to deliver high-quality products in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop software engineering teams, promoting a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing culture

  • Manage software development activities across the full delivery lifecycle, including planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support

  • Partner with Product Management, Project Management, Quality Assurance, Operations, and other stakeholders to define priorities, scope, dependencies, and delivery plans

  • Provide technical leadership and support engineering teams in making effective architecture, design, and implementation decisions

  • Establish and maintain software engineering standards, development practices, code quality expectations, and documentation requirements

  • Monitor delivery progress, identify risks and dependencies, and take corrective action to ensure projects are delivered on time and to the required standard

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, career development, and succession planning for software engineering team members

  • Promote agile delivery practices, including effective sprint planning, backlog management, reviews, retrospectives, and continuous improvement

  • Ensure software solutions meet requirements for security, scalability, availability, performance, maintainability, and regulatory compliance

  • Identify opportunities to improve development processes, tooling, automation, technical capability, and engineering productivity

  • Manage relationships with software suppliers, consultants, and technology partners where required

  • Provide regular reporting to senior leadership on delivery status, team capacity, technical risks, resource requirements, and key performance indicators

Required Qualifications

  • Significant experience in software development, software engineering, or a related technical discipline, including experience managing or leading software teams

  • Proven experience delivering software products or platforms across the full software development lifecycle

  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, application development, testing, deployment, and technical operations

  • Experience managing engineers through recruitment, performance reviews, coaching, professional development, and team planning

  • Practical experience with agile methodologies, software delivery planning, backlog management, and project risk management

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, organisational, and stakeholder management skills

  • Experience working with source control, continuous integration and continuous delivery, automated testing, and software development tooling

  • High attention to detail balanced with the ability to take a strategic, organisation-wide view of software delivery

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing distributed or cross-functional software engineering teams

  • Experience with cloud platforms, microservices, APIs, databases, and modern web or enterprise application development

  • Experience implementing DevOps, platform engineering, observability, and infrastructure automation practices

  • Relevant degree or professional qualification in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related field

  • Experience working in an environment with formal information security, data protection, quality, or regulatory requirements

  • Professional certification in agile delivery, project management, cloud technologies, or software engineering
